An interview with Sokquon Tran

The Birth of Landscape.
Romanticism was a teutonic movement that was inspired by the philosophy of Goethe and Schopenhauer in the 18 century. It influenced such thinkers as Nietzsche, musicians - Wagner and Schubert and also played a part in the visionary work of painters - Casper David Friedrich and our own Eugene Von Guerard. The central essence of Romanticism is that for the first time in history we could portray the spirituality or God though Art without direct reference to religious icons or symbols. The power of the individual and not the collective was established as a worthy conduit to reveal the miracles of the higher power within all of us and the exterior nature. A landcape could now exist without containing direct references or motifs, to reveal the miraculousness of the great creator. The sheer beauty of earth was credible evidence that there is greater force that inhabits the universe and speaks through our vast and powerful surroundings. Sokquon Trans work possesses all the elements of the intangible and encompasses the revelation of the Romantic movement and the Sublime tradition.
